COMPARISON OF TEST METHODS TO MEASURE THE RESPIRATION ACTIVITY OF WASTE SAMPLES

As a measure to reduce climate-changing emissions to the Earth’s atmosphere, European countries have agreed to reduce the emissions potential from landfills. The EU Landfill Regulations developed for this purpose (Council Directive 1999/31 EC) present different possibilities to member states to achieve this aim. In Germany, for example, all municipal and commercial waste has to be pre-treated before landfilling in order to achieve a reduction of 65% in the biologically degradable waste by 2016. In order to measure the reduction in the biological degradation potential, each member country developed or is developing different criteria.

The respiration activity in waste samples for the assessment of the biological degradability potential under aerobic conditions is determined by using two different measurement methods. In Germany, the respiration activity is measured based on the RA4 method and in England the adopted method is the so-called DR4 process. The comparability of both methods is investigated and the advantages and disadvantages are presented. On the basis of the results of the investigations, a conversion formula or factor has been developed in order to be able to compare the results. For the further development of the RA4 method, suggestions are presented.
