INTEGRATED CONCEPT FOR DECENTRALISED WASTEWATER AND BIOWASTE TREATMENT – EXPERIENCES AT THE PILOT PLANT STAGE

The re-use of spent water is an important issue to reduce the use of potable water in the face of restrictions on natural water availability. Municipal wastewater treated in centralised wastewater treatment plants is usually discharged after treatment without further reuse. Also, huge amounts of drinking water are often wasted for irrigation and other purposes where lower grade water would be sufficient. The required quality of reclaimed water depends on the intended application. An elevated nutrient content in recycled wastewater may lead to advantages in irrigation in order to save fertiliser and simultaneously reduce the total nutrient discharge to water bodies (Bixio et al., 2006). Decentralised wastewater treatment of decentralised facilities can be a feasible alternative considering the high construction costs of sewerage systems which transport the wastewaster over long distances to a centralised treatment plant. This paper presents a concept for the treatment of wastewater in combination with biowaste. Two basic treatment steps are taken into account: a membrane treatment stage for the wastewater and an anaerobic digestion stage for the combined fermentation of biowaste and concentrated wastewater from the membrane treatment stage. This concept results in three different products: (1) a purified microorganism-free permeate that can be used for irrigation purposes (2) biogas that can further be transformed to heat or energy (3) hygienised digestion residues which can be used as soil conditioner in gardening or agriculture after a post-composting step.
