The rapid urbanisation of Thailand cities without adequate concern for environmental issues has led to a degradation of environmental quality in Thai urban areas.
Any major infrastructure network or facility must be developed by the municipality together with the surrounding areas. Infrastructure and services development have important technical components that may be solved by bringing in experienced consultants and contractors. The protection of public health and of the environment is gaining importance in Thailand, and those issues must be integrated into the urban plan. The municipality of Lamphun has been actively involved in urban environmental planning and management projects since 1996 and has demonstrated both political and administrative will in initiating the development of an Integrated Urban Management Plan (IUEM). At present the municipality of Lamphun is involved in an EU funded Asia-Urbs project, that intends a further development and improvement of existing IUEM plans.
