Artikel NeuResults of long-term experiments on leachate and heavy metals transformations in pre-treated residual waste

In order to minimise emissions and environmental impacts only pre-treated waste should be landfilled. For the last eight years a series of continuous experiments has been conducted at the Institute WAR, Technische Universität Darmstadt, in order to determine the emissions of various kinds of pre-treated waste.

mechanical biological waste treatment, leachate, heavy metals forms

As in some countries, e.g. in the Eastern and Southern Europe, the biologically pre-treated residual waste are applied as compost or for recultivation purposes the availability of persistent pollutants, such as heavy metals in these kinds of waste was also studied. Untreated residual waste, thermally treated residual waste and residual waste from three different biological-mechanical plants were used for the study. These three different types of waste were incubated in several small and large lysimeters under different landfill conditions. Various data, including production and composition of the gas and the leachate, were collected from each lysimeter and examined. After 8 years storage, some of the lysimeters were re-opened and the out-coming material was examined in order to characterise the material after the period of landfilling. In the paper the interim results of the leachate production and composition from two different types of waste, which were both treated mechanically-biologically, after a storage time of nearly eight years are presented and discussed. Furthermore, data on heavy metals leaching and additional laboratory investigations are used to make short- and long-term prognosis of leaching of these elements from landfills.

In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.

Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft

This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
