Production of high quality composts from food industry residues and by-products for fertilisation of organic farming grown vegetables and olive trees

SUMMARY:
In organic farming agriculture systems the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers is not allowed. This is the reason why it is necessary to use organic amendments to supply nitrogen and other nutrients to the plants as well as organic matter in order to improve the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils.

In Portugal most of the authorised commercial fertilizers fulfilling the requirements for organic farming are imported and very expensive; however in our country there are several biowastes that can be converted in organic fertilizers compatible with organic farming procedures and requests. The present work was developed in the scope of project AGRO 508 “Composting and valorisation of food industry residues as an organic fertilizer on organic farming”, which main objective is to value different organic residues, by composting and transforming them into quality fertilizers, compatible with organic farming. Composting trials were carried out with several - on and off - farm residues and by-products in 3 demonstration units, located in three different regions, respectively at: Cartaxo - Ribatejo (Agro-Sanus – AS), Odemira - Alentejo (Iberian Salads – IS) and Torre de Moncorvo – Trás-os-Montes (Viaz – VZ). The raw materials and by-products used were: olive oil waste, olive leaves, grape stalks, grape marc, rice husk, orange peels, wastes from the tannery (carnaz) and cork industries, and horse and cattle manure in different mixtures and proportions. Results of characterisation showed that composts produced have adequate quality to be used in organic farming.
