SUMMARY:
Roxarsone or 3-nitro-4-hydroxy-phenylarsonic acid is declined as a pharmaceutical but can be used as a growth promoter for poultry and swine industrial mass farming. At the moment it is established in the USA and Southern Asia, but the producer companies try to capture the European market. Concentrations in animal food are about 250 mg/kg. It passes the body nearly unchanged, hence the poultry litter still contains about 30 mg arsenic/kg and pig manure about 0.6 mg arsenic/kg. By application of this litter as a fertilizer to agricultural areas Roxarsone can be degraded by microorganisms and arsenic accumulates in soil or is washed out into the water phase.
In past years, agricultural biogas production from manure or litter in Germany increased rapidly due to new German legislation (EEG). More than 2.000 biogas plants have been installed until now. In this study the effect of Roxarsone on the biogas production was investigated. Therefore batch tests have been carried out according to DIN 38414 S8. Thus the biogas production potential of a substrate can be estimated. Roxarsone was spiked to cellulose and inoculated with digested sewage sludge. The gas production was monitored about 21 days. Additionally experiments with spiked piggery manure were carried out. The results show, that even low concentrations of Roxarsone already decrease the biogas production. Increasing concentrations of Roxarsone can lead to a complete inhibition of biogas production. Arsenic containing food additives can lead to a minimisation of biogas production in agricultural biogas plants. Therefore the use of this growth promoter is not commendable for farms which already installed biogas plants.

In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.
Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft

This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
