Biological drying of biowaste to generate biomass

SUMMARY:
Against the background of the usage of the compost plant for the biological treatment of Municipal Waste in the Waste treatment centre Singhofen, it was necessary to find a new solution for the biological waste treatment. After comparing different variations of biological waste treatment in a study the result was that a biological drying process to produce solid biomass-fuel would be economically the best solution.

The used technology will be common aerated tunnels which are usually used for the compost production. The produced biomass will be transported to a power plant for energy recovery. To optimise the quality of the generated biomass a fraction of material < 15 mm was separated. This undersized fraction will be transported for material recycling to an external compost plant. Large-scale tests demonstrated that the exothermal compost process delivered enough energy to dry the material down to 20 – 30 weight percent water content. The calorific value increased to 10-12 kJ/kg. Tests in a power plant with this material showed satisfactory results. A first conditioning plant will be starting in the beginning of 2007. Especially because of the subsidisation of burning biomass in biomass power plants, drying biowaste is an attractive alternative to the common compost treatment.

In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.

Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft
