Sustainable Waste Management for the Soccer Stadium in Munich

SUMMARY:
The Munich soccer associations built a new stadium, the ALLIANZ ARENA for the Soccer World Championship of 2006. The project is designed by the architects Herzog & de Meuron from Basel, Switzerland. The European legal situation has required the general planer to hand in a detailed sustainability report.

Said report was commissioned to the architect PhD Eng. Ulrike de Bertoldi-Schnappinger. The report determined the amount of waste produced during the games and after, the different types of waste, collection options including various combinations of source separation and the most efficient waste disposal, the total logistic of the goods and rests inside the stadium as the collection of the hazardous waste, of the green cuttings from the soccer field and the bio & food waste occurring in the stadium. Furthermore it offered advice and assistance pertaining possible modifications, adaptations and changes that would ensure the realisation of the project.
