An overview of the organic solid waste management in Greece is presented with emphasis placed on municipal solid waste, and the options available for conforming to the targets for organic matter diversion of the EU Landfill Directive.
Currently Greece is heavily dependant on landfilling, with a small fraction of the municipal solid waste (MSW) being recycled and composted, while there are no incineration plants – apart from those for healthcare waste. More specifically, information is provided on the: geography and demography of Greece; administrative organisation, relevant local and regulatory authorities, competencies and responsibilities; political and legislative background, including current waste management guidelines, trends and plans, which are rapidly changing under the pressure of the EU waste policy; categories, quantities, composition and geographical aspects of all types of organic waste; brief description of existing biological treatment plants and planned treatment capacity; public perception of source separation, and market conditions for products from biological waste treatment; and, future trends regarding organic waste management policies and building the required biological treatment capacity.
