The new European Battery Regulation introduces both advantages and challenges for the recycling of lithium-ion batteries. Accordingly, it mandates that a minimum of 70 % of the average weight of lithium batteries must be recycled by the end of 2030.
Specific recovery targets are set at 95 % for cobalt, copper and lead, 80 % for lithium and 95 % for nickel. Additionally, a stricter requirement for comprehensive data collection and verification from recycling companies is obligated. First step in achieving these obligations is a general assessment of the end-of-life lithium-ion batteries that are subject to recycling. This includes detailed overview of different battery designs, a general knowledge of the composition of exterior components as well as a characterisation on module and since current LIB recycling processes lack a characterisation on element level, a suitable method is required that provides repeatable and reliable results. This work presents preliminary findings of the pre-treatment and briefly discusses upcoming challenges regarding the European Battery Regulation.

Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft
