The full-scale invasion of the territory of Ukraine by the Russian Federation is accompanied by the pollution and destruction of environmental components, destruction of the socio-economic sphere, and infrastructure facilities.
Concerning waste management, there is a constant generation of construction/demolition waste, the quantitative and qualitative composition of which is currently difficult to assess. The characteristics and composition of destruction waste generated as a result of military actions differ from ordinary construction waste. Waste streams may contain contaminants after the detonation of explosive devices which makes it difficult to identify and sort such waste. Therefore, due to the change in daily lifestyle and consumption behavior, municipal solid waste (MSW) generation and composition are expected to change. A lot of infrastructure in the waste management sector has been destroyed, which means that big amounts of unsorted and untreated waste currently end up in landfills, most of which are uncontrolled and not state-of-the-art.
