FuLIBatteR - Future Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling for Recovery of Critical Raw Materials

Global crises, like the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic, and dependency on the economic situation on raw material markets, as well as unexpected issues in global supply chains, such as the Suez Canal obstruction by a large container ship, intensify the efforts of local production and consequently, of sufficient raw material supply as well as regional solutions for recycling. Unfortunately, the raw materials for producing our daily life goods and things for saving the living standard are not evenly distributed worldwide (European Commission, 2022; Olivetti, Gaustad, & Fu, 2017).

FuLIBatteR, a module of the competence centre of K1-MET GmbH, funded within the frame of the Austrian Competence Center COMET, will generate innovative knowledge about the recyclability of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) under special consideration of critical raw material recovery. Consequently, the material cycle of LIBs will be closed by implementing innovative recycling processes. Thus, the immediate result at the end of the module will be the combination and structuring of the developed processes to the best practice treatment route, including pretreatment, pyrometallurgical and bio-hydrometallurgical processes for elevated recycling efficiencies and generation of high-quality secondary raw materials. The treatment approach of used and spent LIBs will decrease the dependency of Austria and Central Europe on international raw materials markets regarding the critical elements such as lithium, phosphorous, cobalt, silicon, and graphite, as well as the economically essential metals copper, nickel and manganese. Thus, the results will meet the demands of the related regulations and improve the current state-of-the-art.

In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.

Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft

This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
