Process Digitization in Waste Management - An Operational Way of Breaking the Cycle

Recycling 4.0 (circular and smart) is not a myth, but structurally as well as operationally still far away from its name-giving politico-economic movement Industry 4.0. Furthermore, there exist different operational approaches under this synonym and it is yet hard to discover which will lead
our waste management into a 'real†circular economy.

As heterogeneous materials, most waste streams are widely complex in composition, volume and source of generation. Adding processes as waste handling and treatment, the overall waste management cycle gets even more diverse. The Age of Digitization accelerates the need to merge material streams, techniques and operations in order to create process transparency, increase quality in products and optimize response time in processing. Within its complexity, digitization of waste management relies on three mayor factors: first budget, second target-oriented understanding of its value and third personnel who is professionally capable to implement it. Unfortunately, it is often within a company, that only one or two of these factors do coexist. Moreover, in times where the largest innovation in Recycling 4.0 gets limited to the digitization of billing (accounting), digitization lies way below its potential. Big-Data, IoT, QR-codes and computing capacities are nowadays often named in connection with the recycling industry, but only naming them does not fulfil their purpose. This article and its presentation give an insight into the operational use of digitization in materials stream processing. It overviews challenges in transformation, provides existing examples of technical implementations and shows perspectives of a sustainable digitization process within the circular economy.

Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft

This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
