The project 'Tex2Mat†was a cooperation between companies working in the field of recycling or textiles and universities specializing in the field of polymer engineering and recycling. There were two polymers (PET and PA) examined and the whole project divided into two subprojects.
The EU’s legal requirements on circular economy present big challenges on the Austrian textile industry which is mostly dominated by small and mid-sized enterprises. Nowadays textiles material for towels and laundry tend to be more and more made from a mixture of fibres, typically PET and cotton, which makes recycling especially difficult. On the other hand, in order to avoid landfill, incineration and to preserve our resources, the closing of life time cycles is essential. In the course of the project 'Tex2Mat†companies and universities working in that field came together to find a solution for that problem. The central task of the project was the separation of the PET fibres from the cotton fibres. In the following steps, the recycled PET fibres were analysed and their suitability for spinning determined. The central trials of the project were the trials for spinning and weaving which were successfully conducted and resulted in the production of towels in the same quality as the original.
