The global steel production is the neck of the industrial civilization. Almost any produced good and service needs inputs that are directly or indirectly made of steel. However, the production of steel has not only major impacts on the overall economy.
Within the EU project TORERO (TORefying wood with Ethanol as a Renewable Output: large-scale demonstration), a cost-, resource-, and energyefficient technology concept for producing bioethanol from a wood waste feedstock, fully integrated in a large-scale, industrially functional steel mill will be demonstrated. Wood waste is converted to bio-coal by torrefaction. Bio-coal replaces fossil powdered coal in a steel mill blast furnace. Carbon monoxide and hydrogen in blast furnace exhaust fumes is microbially fermented to bioethanol, while material and energy loops of the process are closed to a very large degree. Every steel mill that implements this concept will be able to produce at least 80 million litres of bioethanol per year by using 250,000 t of waste wood by year. This project creates a value chain for wood waste, which currently has no high value applications. TORERO is add-on technology that can be used to upgrade existing facilities of the steel sector. To assess the sustainability, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) will be used for the environmental assessment, furthermore a social Life Cycle Assessment (s-LCA) will be applied, providing scientific indicators for social aspects of this new value chain.

Rechtliche und praktische Unsicherheiten bei der Durchführung des europäischen Klimaanpassungsrechts durch das Bundes- Klimaanpassungsgesetz (KAnG)
© Lexxion Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (6/2025)
In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.
Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft

This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
