In general terms, landfill mining (LFM) and enhanced landfill mining (ELFM) aim for the mitigation of the pollution originating from landfill sites, reduction of aftercare and closure costs, land reclaim in urban areas, material recovery and, among many others, regaining landfill capacity.
Within the framework of the 'EU Training Network for Resource Recovery through Enhanced Landfill Mining - NEW-MINEâ€, about 370 Mg of waste were excavated from a landfill site in Mont-Saint-Guibert, Belgium. The fine fractions (material < 90 mm) from the excavated waste were obtained through the implementation of a ballistic separation process. An amount of fine fractions of about 80 wt.% (raw state) was obtained with respect to the total amount of excavated material.
The material composition, physico-chemical properties and particle size distribution of the fine fractions were determined and analyzed. Parameters such as bulk density and water content were determined regarding the physico-chemical properties. Grouped material fractions, such as combustibles, inert, metals, agglomerated fines < 10 mm, fine fractions < 10 mm and others, were employed for the classification of the material composition in raw and dry states. This information is of critical importance for designing an efficient mechanical processing for the fine fractions.

Rechtliche und praktische Unsicherheiten bei der Durchführung des europäischen Klimaanpassungsrechts durch das Bundes- Klimaanpassungsgesetz (KAnG)
© Lexxion Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (6/2025)
In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.
Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft

This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
