Coal tar, as a by-product from coal gasifi cation in municipal or manufactured gas plants (MGP), has been used for numerous industrial purposes including wood impregnation and as a raw material for ointments. Initially valued for its antibiotic properties, the constituents of coal tar constituents, when released into the environment, now pose considerable threats to soil and groundwater quality in many industrialized countries.
Coal tar is a complex mixture; its aromatic and phenolic constituents are amongst the most worrisome substances from an environmental viewpoint. Understanding abiotic and enzymatically mediated pollutant transformation processes, involving complex contaminant, geochemical and microbial matrices, is required to control and, if desired, enhance biogeochemical reactions that contribute to site detoxification. In this context, one of the aspects less well understood is the role of poorly soluble electronacceptors, including Fe(III) and Mn(IV) minerals, in anaerobic contaminant transformation processes. Despite their poor aqueous solubility and thus poor bio-accessibility, these species participate in microbe-driven geochemical cycles. Several mechanisms, including electrochemically conductive pilus-like assemblages expressed by Geobacter species, or Shewanella’s chelatingagents, enable for extracellular electron transport to practically insoluble Fe(III) surfaces serving as terminal electron acceptors in contaminant oxidation, have been ‘devised’ by nature.

Rechtliche und praktische Unsicherheiten bei der Durchführung des europäischen Klimaanpassungsrechts durch das Bundes- Klimaanpassungsgesetz (KAnG)
© Lexxion Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (6/2025)
In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.
Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft

This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
