For more than a decade a number of social enterprises with different organisational structures and conditions have been established in Vienna (e.g. Wiener Tafel, Sozialmarkt). All of these social organizations follow a common goal, namely the transfer of food surpluses from food related businesses to charities and people in need.
Foodstuff is provided by food producers, retailers and the gastronomy free of charge. The objective of the project 'Food waste prevention by passing on surplus food to people in need', on behalf of the Environmental Protection Department of the City of Vienna - MA22, was to represent the current status of food transfer in Vienna, involving social organisations to estimate the amount of food passed on and the demand charitable institutions have for food received at nocharge from the 'Wiener Tafelâ€. Questionnaires (and surveys) were conducted, and the results were discussed with experts.
