Tailings of Mining and Processing as Alternative Raw Material Repository

The research objects discussed in this paper are two tailing ponds called Bollrich near Goslar in Lower Saxony, Germany. Both of them were used for the disposal of fl otation residues originating from the processing of Rammelsberg ore. That lead, zinc and copper sulphide ores are accompanied by trace elements, which are now referred to as materials of strategic economic importance. Due to the lack of economic interest during the time of mining activity at the Rammelsberg Heights, the resulting tailings are expected to contain some of these materials as well. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the potential of those two tailing ponds for landfi ll mining and to suggest a possible way of processing these tailings to obtain the contained metals. For the process design a holistic approach is pursued.

Materials of strategic economic importance are necessary for leading-edge technology and future economic growth in highly developed countries. Examples for such materials are platinum groupmetals, alloy elements for steel production, high-tech metals, and rare earths (BMBF 2012). The majority of these materials must be imported from abroad. In consequence, economy sectors that require these minerals and metals are vulnerable to crises and high export taxes collected by supplying countries. In addition to that, the current world marked situation is characterised by too low supply and too high demand. A direct supply of such raw materials from deposits within acountry like Germany would contribute significantly to the relaxation of its economic Situation with regard to this Problem.
