Decisions on the technical measures for decreasing the gas emissions from the existing MSW landfills should be based on the evaluation of the current and future long-term emissions. Six Ukrainian landfills were investigated using laboratory tests (thermal and spectral methods, gas generation tests and others).
The observed degreeof reactivity and remaining LFG potential is generally much lower thanpredicted with the IPCC model for Ukrainian climatic conditions. Complexmodeling of processes in the LF shows that biological decay is mostlyinfluenced by LF operation procedure. Field or laboratory investigations forcorrect site-specific assessment of landfill reactivity and LFG generationpotential are recommended.
Landfilling is stillthe most widespread method of municipal solid waste (MSW) management in themost of countries of the world with lower income, including new EU MemberStates. In the former Soviet Union more than 90% MSW is landfilled on the largenumber of LFs and dumps, e.g. number of waste disposal sites exceeds 6,000 inUkraine only.
