New Transportation and Collecting Box for Waste Monitors and Televisions

With the objective of satisfying the statutory requirements for the collection and transport of waste monitors and televisions, a research project on the new development of a suitable container/packaging system for waste monitors and televisions is successfully finished. The research consortium is looking forward to the container's batch production.

The background to this project is the German act governing the sale, return and environmentally sound disposal of electrical and electronic equipment (ElektroG) that came into effect on March 24, 2006. With this act, the new requirements of the EU Directives (2002/95/EG and WEEE) were implemented in German law. According to § 9, para. 4 of ElektroG, the waste equipment is to be collected and stored in five collection groups. Especially collection group 3 is deviating significantly from the statutory requirements in the disposal practice.
Especially, monitors and televisions are not collected separately nor damage-free. The equipment is often damaged as a result of incorrect transport and handling. Moreover the full collection containers are generally emptied by tipping at the primary treatment facilities so that the delivered waste equipment suffers substantial damage overall. This not only unnecessary destruction to severe, but also to the increased danger of the release of harmful substances. The current collection and transportation practice of waste monitors and televisions in roll-off containers is neither compliant to the law nor in line with the practice of sustainable and efficient disposal.
To solve this problem, Dr. Brüning Engineering, Brake, ELPRO Elektronik-Produkt Recycling GmbH, Braunschweig, Gebr. Koch GmbH & Co. KG, Lage and das Dortmunder Institut für Distributions- und Handelslogistik developed an innovative suitable container/packaging system for waste monitors and televisions.
