To estimate the stocks of materials in industrial buildings depending on type, size, usage and age of the buildings as a first step a case study of a production site in Weinheim (Baden-Württemberg) has been carried out. Additionally to the characterization of the buildings and the material stocks, the demolition procedure and possible recycling strategies have been investigated.
In our society, during the last decades, the largest share of mineral resources and a major share of metallic resources have been consumed by the building sector. This consumption has led to large stocks of materials. At the end of the lifetime of buildings these stocks should be reused as a source for secondary resources. As to metals this is especially interesting for Germany, which has no significant natural resources of metals and depends totally on imports.
Especially industrial sites can be expected to have high stocks of metals. In order to optimize resource recovery, a prerequisite is the knowledge of amount and quality of the stocks in these buildings but little is known here in literature. The interest of our research is investigating ur-ban mining from the sector of industrial and commercial buildings. As a first step, a case study at a historical production site to determine stocks and flows of the existing types of buildings has been carried out.
