Remediation of Acidic Lakes and Contaminated Sludge by Injection of CO2

The "Floating Bioreactor" was invented and designed by URS Deutschland GmbH to remediate mainly polluted sediments with organic load. The principles of the floating bioreactor have been tested for the dredging of sediments in channels in Berlin and for the neutralization of acidic lakes in the state of Brandenburg, Germany.

The pilot test has been funded through the Bundesministerium für Forschung und Bildung (BMBF) and accompanied by the Federal Research Centre Karlsruhe, Water Technology and disposal. The partners of URS have been Gebr. Kemmer GmbH, Berlin, to cover construction, installation, and operation, and the Department for Water Technology and Municipal Water Construction at the University of Cottbus (BTU) as the scientific supervisor.
The main technical principles of the floating Bioreactor are:
- Loosening and lifting of sediments by injection of air in a riser pipe ("mammoth pump"),
- Delivery of oxygen during sediment lift,
- Stripping of volatile compounds (contaminants and bad odor),
- Collecting and cleaning of separated air from air lift device with granular activated carbon,
- On-site treatment of lifted suspension, such as sorting and clarification,
- Controlled re-suspension within water body and
- All installed on a floating barge.
