In cooperation with the ZAK Kempten and the Mittelstands-Institut at the University of Applied Sciences Kempten, bifa Environmental Institute has accomplished a comparison of the waste-collection of lightweight packaging, plastic, composite and metal at the recycling centre with the kerbside collection in a "yellow bag" respectively mixed with other recyclables in a "recycling bin". Examined were the environmental impacts as well as costs of these collection strategies and acceptance among the general public. This study has been carried out on behalf of by the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Public Health and the ZAK Kempten.
Comparing the collecting systems, a co-mingled collection of lightweight packaging in a bag delivered at the recycling centre proofed to be the most eco-efficient method for the ZAK Kempten. The eco-efficiency of sorted packaging collection at the recycling centre is similar to the kerbside collection scenarios. Comparing these kerbside collection scenarios, no significant difference between the eco-efficiency of the "yellow bag" and the "recycling" bin could be determined.
In addition to the eco-efficiency analysis a survey among citizens was conducted. This research shows that a kerbside collection system is the most appropriate system to collect lightweight packaging from house-holds. Within the various recycling collection systems most people, especially younger ones, would prefer a "recycling bin".
