Latest developments in the disposal of bio-organic MSW in China

Increasing waste from industrial and domestic sources are piling up in China, and sustainable technologies are necessary to deal with this issue. Such technologies can be acquired through technology transfer, however a review of the literature shows an information disparitiy between micro and macroeconomic players.

Macro-economic players such as provincial or regional authorities, multinational companies and larger NGOs, have access to ample guidelines and assistance on how to support technology transfer; however micro-economic players (arguably those who actually undertake the technology transfer) are given hardly any decision making tools in order to judge the suitablitiy of the technology they are about to transfer. It is unsurprising then, that despite a considerably literature, technology transfer to China still fails to deliver its expected outcomes and leads to failures at both operational and inception levels. The aim of this research is four-fold:
1. To build a bridge between technology transfer research and waste disposal research;
2. To research and outline unique aspects of Chinese waste composition and collection to give foreign waste practicioners a better insight into the challenges technologies face in a China application;
3. To outline the waste disposal technologies currently used and give a realistic assessment of future scenarios;
4. To apply long-standing China-experience to the topic of MSW disposal, thereby explaining scenarios and highlighting issues those without China knowledge may fail to understand or take into account.
This article will highlight unique aspects of Chinese waste composition and disposal, as well as giving some insight into the vagiaries of the Chinese waste-landscape.
