Hospital in-house waste management and environmental impact

The treatment of waste material in Hospital Units (H.U.) is an important issue strongly related to both the environmental pollution and the control of the total expenditures by the side of the H.U. administrations.

Under these circumstances, the H.U. administrations focus on solutions which ensure their autonomy concerning waste treatment, in an attempt to reduce their expenditures as well as contribute to the protection of the environment. The most common used method for H.U. waste treatment is incineration. Approximately 40% of Greek H.U. own medical waste incinerators, the majority of which are not in use due to the inadequate methods used for the treatment of the exhausted gases. The aim of this paper is to show the importance of the incineration method for the protection of the environment and provide clear estimations concerning its real impact to the reduction of the H.U. expenditures.
