Study on production patterns and characteristics of non-household, non-hazardous municipal wastes

Municipal solid waste (MSW) management is considered a public service, roviding citizens with a system of disposing of their waste in an environmentally sound and economically feasible way. The amount and composition of waste generated comprise the basic information needed for the planning, operation and optimisation of waste management systems.

Municipalities in Greece and elsewhere are coping, among others, with solid waste management issues such as waste collection and transportation scheduling, optimization of waste bins allocation, management of separate collection of recyclables and special waste schemes. Waste producers within a municipality can be discriminated into two main categories: household and non-household producers. Non-household producers include an extensive list of commercial businesses and smallscale industrial installations within the municipality. Solid waste production from households has been extensively researched and production patterns have already been proposed. The nonhousehold waste stream, on the other hand, has been given little attention by researchers and this paper targets to contribute to this direction. A thorough list of non-household municipal waste producers has been compiled and field survey related information was collected and analyzed. The data collected included information on produced waste quality, quantities, environmental attitude and green procurements on private business on a wide range of 105 non-household waste producers in the Municipality of Kalamaria, Greece.
