Monthly variability of heavy metal accumulation and detoxifying response of freshwater Copepoda, Cyclops abyssorum

The influence of seasonality on antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase, glyoxalases and of total glutathione and on heavy metal content such ad lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, zinc, iron and copper was investigated in Cyclops abyssorum collected monthly from Lake Piediluco (Italy).

Specimens of C. abyssorum showed seasonal variations of both detoxificant parameters and metal accumulation. Low heavy metal concentrations were detected in tissues of Cyclops abyssorum and from the correlation analysis emerged that only glutathione S-transferase and glyoxalase II were positively related with Pb and Ni and Pb content, respectively. These changes appear to be linked to the biological status of the species and to the environmental factors of the lake, like the daily fluctuations of the hydrologic level leading to changes of the chemical and physical parameters along the entire water column.
