To search an acceptable composting technology for the country, a Demo Compost plant is built as a part of WasteSafe II research project in cooperation with a NGO named as Samadhan, in its premises at Khalishpur area of Khulna city.
Due to lack of practical experience on composting processes other than bamboo framed passive aeration process, only one type has been practiced. In this study four types of processes is successfully constructed and now is under operation. In these four types, three are passively aerated and the rest one is forced aerated. First one is passively aerated horizontal bamboo frame compost pile. Set up of this aerator and operation such as turning is easy. Second one is also passively aerated but instead of bamboo frame, perforated vertical PVC pipe is used. For using vertical pipe, chimney effect is found, which can help to well aeration than first. Third one is forced aeration, which minimizes the manual operation and minimizes the space of the plant for do not turning. And fourth one is passively aerated compost pile same as practiced in the Samadhan Compost Plant. The characteristics of compost depend on the waste composition. In the used waste for demo compost plant percentage of rapidly degradable waste is greater than others and toxic substance and metal type waste are less. So that expected quality of generated compost will be in the standard. Before all of the works, a well planed operation plan required, which has been made for this compost plant. Various parameter like temperature, ph, density, volatile solid content, moisture content, particle size distribution etc are find out during the composting process to understand the change of waste and the process of composting is going well or not.
