Evaluation of the initiatives taken in an urban area of bangladesh to increase the level of MSW collection and public awareness

No comprehensive awareness campaign either from city authority or NGO/CBO is ongoing. Nabarun Sangsad, a NGO and Paribesh Unnayan Committee 24 No. Ward, a CBO have been collecting wastes from the sources through door-todoor collection system against tiny payment. It is revealed that the initiative suffers from a number of constraints such as insufficient number of Rickshaw vans, financial inability, absence of logistic supports from the city authority, evaluation of success and changes and the absence of appropriate method. At present their collection efficiency is very slim and the ward suffers from the adverse environmental consequences from the unmanaged MSW.

 Several practical steps have been undertaken in this ward to improve the level of people’s awareness and primary collection efficiency. The ward is divided into six zones considering the convenience of primary waste collection and the availability of secondary disposal sites. An ‘Awareness Leaflet’ was designed, printed and distributed among the city dwellers and their written and signed commitments for proper source storage have been taken. University students have been involved to conduct mass awareness campaign among the city dwellers of this ward. Stakeholders’ dialogues have been organized to understand the problems in-depth and to get people perception for improving the situation. To overcome the limitation of the presently used Rickshaws Vans, consideration of field level experiences, newly designed vans were fabricated and handed over to the concerned NGO and CBO. Some awareness festoons were designed and displayed at the important public places of the city and proposal for the Bill Board has been submitted to the city authority. It is observed that the taken initiates have already created positive impacts on the overall MSW management system. To change the present situation of on-site storage, the need of transfer station is highly understood and a design has been proposed. The intermediate results depict that continuous monitoring, refinement of the system, city authority’s logistic support and the social movement rather than pure technical issue are required.
