Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology was applied to find the best ecological alternative for animal fat use. Thinking in cascades, after their use as lubricant an energetic use of animal fat and used cooking oil esters is still possible and can − once more − replace limited resources like fossil fuels.
Whether the cascadic use of animal fat and used cooking oil is really preferable from an environmental point of view and at which level cascade should be ended, was answered by the LCA study. Five scenarios were compared including combustion at rendering plant, biodiesel, coolant, cascade (1) (coolant, reuse after recovery) and cascade (2) (coolant, combustion of used coolant). The environmental impact of each scenario was set in relation to those of the replaced conventional reference system providing the same functionality. Difference in results of scenario and reference scenario are called the ecological benefit of the scenario. Input of 1 kg animal fat was chosen as functional unit.
