Chances for Biogasgeneration and Application in Vietnam

Within the context of the EU programme 'EU-ASEAN Energy Facility†the project 'RENEW†was carried though by an international team from scientific institutes in Vietnam, Greece and Germany. Aim of the project was the development of practice-oriented guidelines for conducting feasibility studies into the production of renewable energy from waste materials in ASEAN countries taking the island of Phu Quoc/ Vietnam as a model.

The regionally strongly varying socio-economic development that is currently taking place in ASEAN countries is resulting in corresponding increases in energy demand and waste production. Large areas of this region are without public electricity supply. If they have an electricity supply at all it is irregular and unreliable, usually produced from fossil fuel such as diesel, with the associated carbon emissions and transport risks (see fig. 2). Up until now, renewable forms of energy have been little used, but trials for their introduction and distribution have begun. The barely developed waste management industry of these countries, particularly the virtually universal practice of landfill without protective measures for man or the environment (see fig. 3), among other negative effects, also results in unnecessary large emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere (particularly methane, which is 20 times more harmful than CO2).
