Leaching of elements is of main concern with respect to future utilization of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration residues; potential environmental impacts from their reuse and/or landfilling must be quantified. Quantitative leaching prediction for both salts and metals is a prerequisite for such assessment.
In this paper we predict the pH-dependent leaching of Ba, Sr, Pb, Zn, Cr, Mo, Cu, and Cd from two different flue gas cleaning products, i.e. air-pollution-control (APC) residues and "pure" fly ash, using a single set of "generic" solubility controlling minerals. Material-specific amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and hydrous ferric oxides (HFO) were determined in separate experiments. Overall, release of Ba, Sr, Zn, and Cd from both materials was described using solubility of (Ba,Sr)SO4, ZnO, and Cd(OH)2(s) whereas leaching of Pb, Cr, Mo and Cu was shown a combination of mineral precipitation, sorption on HFO and complexation with DOC.

Rechtliche und praktische Unsicherheiten bei der Durchführung des europäischen Klimaanpassungsrechts durch das Bundes- Klimaanpassungsgesetz (KAnG)
© Lexxion Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (6/2025)
In the context of the European Climate Law (EU) 2021/1119), the Governance Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 and the Nature Restoration Regulation (EU) 2024/1991, the KAnG came into force on July 1, 2024.
Transformatives Klimarecht: Raum, Zeit, Gesellschaft
© Lexxion Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (6/2025)
This article contends that climate law should be conceived as inherently transformative in a double sense. The law not only guides the necessary transformation of economy and society, but is itself undergoing transformation.
