SEWAGE SLUDGE MANAGEMENT IN SWITZERLAND

There are two main disposal channels for sewage sludge:
-use as fertiliser in agriculture
-final disposal.
Recently, the use of sludge in agriculture has been questioned, in particular because of the inorganic and organic pollutants, including traces of drugs and hormones. The demand for sewage sludge as fertiliser has thus steadily decreased, all the more since a potential risk of contamination with BSE has been shown to exist.

The use of sewage sludge in agriculture is beeing questioned, in particular because of the inorganic and organic pollutants, including traces of drugs and hormones. Therefore a ban is gradually introduced in Switzerland and by end of 2008 all sewage sludge produced in the country must be incinerated. Out of the different ways for thermal disposal of sludge, integrated furnaces in WtE-Systems and combined incineration with domestic waste are the most economical and have been applied with success.
