AUTOMATIC REPORTING BASED ON A CENTRAL DATA BASE IN NORTH RHINEWESTPHALIA/GERMANY – FIRST STEP: THE DIGITAL WASTE DISPOSAL ATLAS

Automatic reporting could be regarded as an ultimate and very ambitious step on a long way of data processing. The North Rhine-Westphalian State Agency for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection completed this final step for their waste management data.

In 2003, a Central Information System on Waste had been published in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is called AIDA (Abfall-Informations-Datendrehscheibe). AIDA is gives structured access to all our waste data like waste owners, waste recycling and disposal plants, chemical characterization of waste and waste volume data. AIDA allows individual research within this data pool and produces individual or standardized evaluations with tables, histograms and data sheets. The ultimate step in publishing waste information was realized in September 2006: The Digital Disposal Atlas NRW is the first automatically written WEB-based report on the complete waste treatment infrastructure in NRW. The report is automatically generated from our data with all figures, maps, tables and graphs. Both AIDA and the Digital Disposal Atlas have been published within one Internet portal (www.abfall-nrw.de); they describe an amplious infrastructure for waste disposal and treatment in a highly industrialized European region (18 m inhabitants).
