STATE-OF-THE-ART AND OUTLOOK ON MANAGEMENT OF WASTE-TO-ENERGY BOTTOM ASHES. PART 1: TREATMENT

The current management strategies adopted in most European countries for the residual portion of municipal solid waste (MSW) after differential collection and recycling of valuable waste fractions imply biological stabilization of the biodegradable fraction and combustion with energy recovery of the non-biodegradable, combustible fraction. Waste to-energy thermal treatment of MSW is to be regarded as an essential part of integrated waste management contributing to the multiple targets of maximizing recycling, improving energy recovery from non-recyclable waste fractions and reducing the environmental impacts from final disposal of the residual waste. (Session A13: Management of bottom ashes (II))

This first part of two papers on management of incinerator bottom ash gives an overview of conventional and innovative techniques for treatment of incinerator bottom ash to improve the quality of the material with a view to both utilization and final disposal. A number of results from specific studies obtained by members of the PHOENIX international working group on Management of MSWI Residues are also reported providing examples of application of the treatment processes outlined to highlight advantages and critical aspects for each.
