STATE-OF-THE-ART AND OUTLOOK ON MANAGEMENT OF WASTE-TO-ENERGY BOTTOM ASHES. PART 2: UTILIZATION

Within recent years, increasing focus has been placed on waste incineration as an attractive method to reduce landfilling of biodegradable waste, and at the same time utilize the energy content of the waste. In a European context, significant efforts have been directed towards establishing and describing best-available-techniques (BAT) with respect to waste incineration, flue gas cleaning technology, and residue treatment. As a result, expected air emission levels have been associated with BAT technology. A clear trend is that emissions to the atmosphere from modern waste incineration facilities will be further reduced in the coming future. (Session A13: Management of bottom ashes (II))

This second part of two papers on management of incinerator bottom ashes by the PHOENIX international working group on Management of MSWI Residues gives an overview of the main utilization options for bottom ashes as well as discusses the most important environmental aspects related to ash utilization and outlines principals for the evaluation of these aspects. The paper further summarizes critical barriers and challenges for further utilization of bottom ashes.
