Use of life cycle impact assessment to evaluate biological waste air treatment in combination with an alternative system

In this paper the authors present a technique aimed at increasing the efficiency of biological waste air treatment.

The objective is to adjust the existing biological waste air treatment systems (i.e. biofilters) to new stricter requirements and thus to reduce the emitted substances and their potential environmental impacts. The principle of the ionisation system is described along with first experiences during the application of ionisation methods in combination with biofilters. The investigated system is evaluated by means of life cycle impact assessment with focus on odour. It is shown which of the measured substances (i.e. VOC) can potentially contribute to the odorant concentration and which substances are having an amount above the odour threshold. Finally substances, which are significantly contributing to odorant concentrations, are presented.
