Integral evaluation of supply and disposal systems at mountain refuges with focus upon solid waste

Mountain refuges play an important role for alpine tourism and local recreation. Their supply and disposal systems are predominately decentralized. Thus mountain refuges represent public standalone infrastructure comprising systems for energy and water supply, wastewater and waste disposal operating under unfavourable conditions like low temperature or far transport distances. The sensitive ecology of alpine regions, climate change, an increasing number of visitors and increased comfort require sustainable resource oriented solutions.

Mountain refuges represent public stand-alone infrastructure comprising systems for energy and water supply, wastewater and waste disposal operating under unfavourable conditions like low temperature or far transport distances. Waste management differs from the other systems since usually no technical systems are necessary and waste is usually transported to municipal waste collection facilities, which causes costs. Waste quantities and related costs can be reduced through waste prevention and composting, but also through methods such as burning or feeding to animals, which are not intended from an environmental point of view and often even illegal. A survey of 100 mountain refuges revealed positive examples but also potentials and need for optimization.
